It makes assumptions that requires one to make assumptions. The reading itself is a little tedious at times (though Davies is always lively) and if you haven't read any of Davies' other books, don't start with this one.. While Thomas has no memory of the tribal ritual his grandfather performed, as Thomas becomes aware of his newly-bestowed gifts, the power corrupts him. Be it his idealist friend Hayward, who has too much promise too little product, the poet Cronshaw who dies in poverty, Fenny Price whose hard work cannot make her draw even reasonably well, his uncle and aunt whose love is both tacit and beautifully potrayed and the writer Norah who shows Philip of a caring and loving other.The most charming people in the novel are Athlneys. Instead, he advocates for unity and cooperation among people and nations and for the principle of sharing to be more closely aligned to the way we organize society – through, for example, the global redistribution of wealth and power that implementing Article 25 universally would necessitate.

Fraternizing is forbidden but, as Tyler knows only too well, the human heart has a way of crossing boundaries. It soon becomes clear that a crime has been committed, and there is no shortage of suspects.
